What is self-care?
Self-care has been somewhat of a buzzword (phrase? buzzphrase?) lately. Self-care is simply doing things to take care of your mental, emotional or physical health. The idea of self-care can look different for everyone, but it isn’t something that should be ignored.
Self-care isn’t just being selfish either. It isn’t only considering your own needs and ignoring anyone else. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Taking care of yourself, whether mentally, physically or emotionally, puts you in a better place to take care of others. Obviously, this is something that is incredibly important for moms.
Self-care for moms doesn’t have to mean a week-long tropical vacation or a full spa day (although those things sound nice) it can be something as simple as taking 20 minutes to read a magazine that you enjoy.
Now that you have an idea of what self-care is, and what it isn’t, here are 10 self-care ideas for moms.
10 self-care ideas for moms
1. Get some exercise
Even if you hate exercise, keep reading. Find a form of exercise that you don’t hate. You may have to try a few new things. If you love it, it won’t feel like “work.” If you hate running, don’t do it! Try yoga or another group class. You don’t even have to leave your house. Some of my favorite exercise “classes” can be found on YouTube. I’ve been following Blogilates for years, and her YouTube videos are fun and so positive. Bonus, if you can’t get away from the kids to exercise, they will have fun joining you.
Another form of exercise that I love is using resistance bands. If you can’t make it to the gym and don’t want to buy dumbbells, resistance bands are the way to go. They’re cheap, portable, and easy to use. I bought this set over a year ago, and I absolutely love it. It’s cheap, perfect for working out at home or taking on the road. It comes with handles and ankle straps, so you aren’t limited like you would be with traditional resistance bands. Whatever you do, just get moving. This one little act of self-care can make a world of difference.
2. Take a bath
This is hands down my favorite form of self-care. It might have to happen after the kids go to bed, but if you love baths, take them! Grab some Epsom salts, some lavender oil and take a nice long relaxing bath. For me, this is the best way to relax after a long crazy day.
3. Say “no” as often as you need to
As moms, we’re always asked to do things. By our kids, families, work, school, the list goes on. Say no as often as you need to. If your stress level is already high, you don’t have to coach every team, chaperone every event or say yes to everything under the sun. Choose the things that you enjoy and skip the rest.
4. Read a book
Sometimes I combine #2 (taking a bath) with reading a book. I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription and it’s one of the few “unnecessary” monthly expenses that I can easily justify. You can try it free for 30 days with this link. If you like reading physical books, check them out from the library. If you don’t enjoy reading books, why not read a magazine or watch a few episodes of your favorite show?
I’ve also been loving Audible lately, I love to read actual books, but Audible is great for when I am cooking, going on walks, or driving somewhere. 5. Start a gratitude practice
Start a gratitude journal and use it daily. This is one of the best self-care ideas for busy moms. It can completely change your perspective! I found this super cute one-minute gratitude journal. It’s around $5, and it’s only one minute a day. There’s really just no excuse not to do this! Starting the day on a positive note can change the course of the entire day.
6. Start a new hobby
Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try, but never done? Maybe it’s rock climbing, painting, photography or knitting, who knows! What better time to try whatever hobby you’ve been putting off? Trying something new can completely change your mindset. If you’re in a funk, this is one of the best ways to get out.
7. Start a mindfulness/meditation practice
This is something that I started doing last year, and it’s life changing! If you don’t feel like you’re a “meditation” person, it’s okay! It’s really something that anyone can do. You can read my post about how to start a meditation practice for more tips.
8. Have a girls night out or date night
Get a babysitter and have a date night with your significant other. Single? Have a girls night out! If you don’t have a regular babysitter or family around, ask one of your friends to do a childcare swap.
9. Get more sleep
This means different things to different people. Personally, I can’t take naps. I think I can count the handful of times that I have napped as an adult on one hand, and all of those were when I was pregnant. I just physically can’t sleep during the day. If you can, good for you! If you have the chance, take a nap!
Maybe getting more sleep means going to bed earlier, or sleeping a little later. Sleep is absolutely essential for your health and sanity. Get it when you can. Having trouble sleeping? 10. Ask for help
If you’re really struggling, ask for help. From your partner, family, or friends. No matter who you are, it’s hard to do it all, and sometimes you just need a break.
